Eleven Life Lessons from Gone With the Wind

1. Know when it’s time to give up on someone: “My dear, I don’t give a damn.”

2. Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow: I’ll think of it tomorrow, at Tara. I can stand it then. Tomorrow, I’ll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.”

3. Let go of old crushes: “Now she had a fumbling knowledge that, had she ever understood Ashley, she would never have loved him; had she ever understood Rhett, she would never have lost him.”

4. Timing is important: “Death, taxes and childbirth! There’s never any convenient time for any of them.”

5. Don’t worry so much about what other people think: “Until you’ve lost your reputation, you never realize what a burden it was or what freedom really is.”

6. There is no such thing as happily ever after: “Like most girls, her imagination carried her just as far as the altar and no further.”

7. Don’t forget your birth control: “Babies, babies, babies. Why did God make so many babies? But no, God didn’t make them. Stupid people made them.”

8. Learn to say your sorry: “And apologies, once postponed, become harder and harder to make, and finally impossible.”

9. Don’t dwell on the past: “The whole world can’t lick us but we can lick ourselves by longing too hard for things we haven’t got any more – and by remembering too much.”

10. Learn how to repurpose household items.

11. Don’t listen to Margaret Mitchell about anything related to slavery, African Americans, or the interracial relationships in the post Civil War South.

  1. This was hilarious! I’m so glad you threw in the picture of Carol Burnett! I may have to pick this book up and read it again. I’d forgotten about the quote under number five. I need to write that down and look at it daily.
