Marry, Date or Dump: Victorian Authors

Cartoon of Dickens and Thackeray

This week’s options might be a little too English-majory for some of you (although my use of the word “English-majory” definitely is not), but I thought I’d give you three of the most important and popular British novelists from the Victorian era to marry, date, or dump. Let me know in the comments who you would choose when faced with Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, and Thomas Hardy as your options. I’m excited to see who you choose and why!

  1. On a personal Level:
Marry Thackery (who despite a tragic marriage seems to have truly been a great husband). Date Hardy who seemed to like courtship but not marriage. Dump Dickens – who once he became a big-shot abandoned his wife.

    On an English-majory level:
Dump Hardy (I couldn’t stand either Tess of the D’Ubervilles or the mayor of Casterbridge), date Dickens (he had plenty of money to spend), marry Thackery – who understood what women want.

    • Love that you separated these out on personal and English-major levels. I 100% agree with dumping Hardy on a purely book-based level. Also you’ve piqued my interest about Thackery’s marriage. I’m going to look into that one. Thanks!

  2. I HATE THOMAS HARDY AND ALL OF HIS WORKS WITH SEVERAL BURNING SUNS WORTH OF PASSION-I AM VERY GRATEFUL FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CAUSE HIM PAIN BY DUMPING HIM.

Ahem. It’s been a thing. This has been the most obvious choice for me in these by far. Of the others, I’d date Dickens. He clearly has issues with too many things for him to pay proper attention to me. Marry Thackery-he seems the least depressed and most romantic of the three.
