Burn, Read, Rewrite: Harry Potter, Narnia, & The Hobbit

I picked three beloved children’s favorites for this week’s game. You pick the book you like best to read, a book you’d like to change to rewrite, and the book you like the least to burn. The choices are The Harry Potter Series, by J.K. Rowling, The Narnia books, by C.S. Lewis, and The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Personally I would….

  • Read The Harry Potter books.
  • Rewrite the Narnia books, to get rid of The Horse and His Boy and take out some of the more heavy handed religious connections.
  • Burn The Hobbit. I liked this book, but I didn’t love it. Sorry family!

What books would you choose? Let me know in the comments!

  1. HI Alison! Great selection!
I ditto your choices … I wouldn’t change a word of the Harry Potter books – masterfully written (great example of the writer not imposing her style and getting out of the way of the story); I love the Narnia Chronicles but there are a few things that could be rewritten to make them even better, and I didn’t care for the Hobbit. I remember when I first picked this book up as a teenager (as a voracious reader and a lover of fantasy), I thought there is just too much “new” to learn and it wasn’t exciting enough.

  2. This game is too hard!!!!!!!!!! – I couldn’t even contemplate last weeks but that being said I guess I would have to agree with you and Patrice.

  3. I veryyyyy much like this game! I think I’d Read the Narnia Chronicles (mainly because I’ve never actually read them and therefore cannot really judge), rewrite Harry Potter (I LOVE the books, don’t get me wrong, but for me personally Rowling’s prose leave a lot to be desired – the story is just soooooo good that I can easily forget about it), and burn The Hobbit (I tried once and despite usually loving that kind of fantasy stuff, I just found it SO BORING).

  4. The problem here is you are not comparing apple to apples — you are comparing two series to one book. You are already “burning” one of the Narnia books (and I’m not a huge fan of any of the last three, although I love the first four.)

So given that in my mind the Narnia series only gets a 57% (4 good books out of 7) – I would say that I would burn that, rewrite The Hobbit and read Harry Potter – even book 5!

  5. Read Narnia-they are so iconic in my childhood memory I even managed to write my undergrad college essay on it.

Rewrite Harry Potter-I find JKR vastly in need of editing and math guidance and I’m a fanfic girl all the way.

I hate to burn The Hobbit, but it’s the one I’m least likely to reread and it doesn’t have the community of Harry Potter or the series impact of Narnia.
